If you have TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain or dysfunction, (that's pain in or around the jaw to you and I) massage can be a fantastic way to help alleviate that pain. TMJ pain can present itself through bruxism (teeth grinding) or clenching your jaw, it can be a huge driver in headaches, migraines, neck and upper back pain. Lots of people do this while sleeping so it can be tricky to catch yourself doing it, but stress from work or home life can definitely impact your jaw. The terms 'gritting your teeth' or 'grin and bear it' came from somewhere, right! If you wake up with an aching jaw, or your dentist has told you your teeth are being ground down and has suggested you wear a mouth guard at night or botox, then you most certainly have TMJ dysfunction of some sort. With this massage, we don't massage your jaw for an hour. We work globally, meaning we do massage your back, neck and glutes (tight glutes are very linked to the jaw...I know...weird but true). We then work around your jaw and offer some intra-oral work if you'd like to try it. Intra-oral work is massage that releases trigger points from inside your mouth (using gloves). We finish off with a dreamy scalp massage because everything is connected and the muscles on your scalp are directly affected by a tight, unhappy jaw.
